Sick and Tired of Dating...

The years passed and Yisca was unsuccessful in finding her match. Propositions continued to flow in from various directions, but she felt she was growing sick and tired of the dating scene. She meets a new guy with high hopes, but after a rendez-vous or two, the energy dissipates: either she or he is not interested, or both.

Yisca felt she needed divine intervention, without which she couldn't continue much longer.

She began a period of intensive prayer. She filled her shemonah esrei (silent devotion) with lengthy personal inserts, meditated alone for hours, and visited the tombs of tzadikim (righteous saints) all over Israel, especially the tomb of Yonatan Ben Uziel, whose grave site is, according to tradition, imbued with special powers to help one find his/her spouse.

The new guys kept coming and going.

Yisca lost hope and didn't know what to do. All her efforts brought no results, and her multitude of prayers didn't deliver the prince on a white horse. "What more can I do, Master of the Universe, that I haven't already done," she asked.

One Shabbat morning, Yisca felt that she had reached the end. She was broken. "How much more can I suffer? What can I do to convince Hashem (G-d) that I have no strength left for another date," she thought to herself.

The answer suddenly came to her: "I will hold a demonstration in front of Hashem like protesters do in front of the Prime Minister's residence!" But where does one hold such a protest? Yisca figured that the best place to demonstrate would be in front of the remnants of Hashem's official residence - the Western Wall in Jerusalem.

"I am coming to demonstrate against you at the Western Wall," Yisca declared to Hashem. "You must understand that I have no strength left. I will not leave until you deliver me my match - the true one meant for me.  Until what age can I live with my parents, and watch their sorrow and pain?" A tear formed on her cheek, as she reviewed the reasons for the protest.

After the Shabbat morning meal, Yisca informed her mother that she was walking to the Western Wall to pray there.

"Are you out of your mind," shrieked the alarmed mother, "to walk from Mevasseret Tziyon to the Western Wall? Do you know how far it is? It's over 9 miles (15 kilometers)!"

"I don't care mother," Yisca responded forcefully. "I am going to pray that I get married soon."

"OK, that's fine to pray at the Western Wall, but wait until the end of Shabbat on Saturday night when you can take the first bus," the mother reasoned.

"No!" insisted the daughter. "I want Hashem to see that I am broken. I have already prayed at the Western Wall numerous times, and I still don't have a ring on my finger."

"But there is a heat wave today. You may faint," the mother said hoping to register with her daughter's common sense.

"Don't worry, mother. I'll be OK."

The mother's plea fell on deaf ears, and Yisca was on her way. She started walking along the highway past Motza towards Jerusalem. The uphill was intense, and she felt the heat. She paused to drink from her water bottle, and continued completely determined to reach the entrance to Jerusalem, cross town on Jaffe Street to the Old City, and finally make the descent to the Western Wall - the gates of prayer to heaven.

"I will convince You Hashem that my time has come to get married," she muttered to herself adding, "This time I won't budge until you answer me."

The uphill climb combined with the heat was debilitating. Yisca's water bottle was empty. She closed her eyes and began to feel dizzy. Before she understood what was happening to her, she lost consciousness and keeled over on the side of the Jerusalem Highway. A driver saw her on the ground and called for an ambulance which arrived in minutes.

A Magen David volunteer named Ariel began treating the unconscious young woman and raised her, together with a colleague, on a stretcher and into the ambulance. On the way to hospital, she opened her eyes and began coming back to herself. Ariel gave her cold water to drink.

"May I ask what you were doing walking to Jerusalem," Ariel inquired. Yisca didn't know what to answer, and after a moment of silence, told him the truth: "I was on my way to the Western Wall to pray."

"But what was so urgent? Why on Shabbat," asked the young volunteer who was wearing a knitted yarmulka on his head.

Bewildered, Yisca smiled and didn't answer.

Her determination impressed the young man, and he engaged her in conversation until their arrival at the hospital. Ariel escorted her inside and saw to it that she receive immediate treatment. He returned to the Magen David base to await further emergency calls.

A few days passed, and Yisca's cellular phone rang. A girl on the other end introduced herself as Ariel's cousin and asked in his name if Yisca would agree to go out with him on a date. "Yes, yes, absolutely," Yisca answered without a moment's hesitation.

A few months later, Ariel and Yisca stood together under the chuppah (wedding canopy) in Jerusalem.

    1. See footnote 3 here: http://www.yeshiva.org.il/midrash/shiur.asp?id=7056 . Mevasseret is within Jerusalem's eruv and therefore it is permitted to carry.

    2. God bless you Baruch Gordon, for being a fair, balanced, unbiased, person in this media, for allowing all comments to be published, even if they don't fit YOUR personal opinion! Today Arutz Sheva has censored 100% of my comments, which I made many many funny ones, along with ones that pointed out so much of the hurtful hypocrisy that certain members/articles, etc contain. Baruch, you are a blessing & rolemodel! :)

  2. I don't know why some people feel the need to comment on here to nit pick what the girl was carrying, rather than give well wishes, and feel happy for the girl. Sheesh! Anyways, what a happy story for that girl, Thanks for sharing a sweet story Baruch Gordon:)

So she locked herself in a closet and told her parents that she won't come out until she some one married her. After a while a burgler come into their home and when he opened the closet door and saw this girl they fell in love and got married. These stories make me weep for joy. Another shlmell got married.

    2. Oh I did, did I? I see, you are one of those boys who punch and kick and tease the girl you like, because you are insecure about asking her for a date! Perhaps your daddy should tell you that ladies fall for gentlemen who treat them like a Goddess...BTW I don't date Humpty Dumpties :)

  6. But you left off the chapter where three years later she filed for divorce because she was bored, took the three kids and collected alimony from poor Ariel who worked seven days a week, even on shabat to meet his support payments. She also joined a lesbian collective that stages protests in support of Hamas and the ISM...That's the modern day Israel...

  8. Oh, please. This is just a fairy tale to please the naieve. I don't believe it and think it is just a joke. The reality is that any religious female who isn't scary ugly and/or isn't dirty poor is likely to find a husband.

  9. The rude and UN-classy JERKS who replied on here (they know who they are) don't seem to grasp that the problem of a woman finding a husband isn't because of the quality of her, it is because of the lack of quality in the stock of men out there. As these UN-articulate gents have just so displayed through their example of their character above.

  10. This is off topic, but one of the reasons that I love to read Israel National news is that I love seeing all of the beautiful Jewish noses! My eyes are soooo tired of seeing the short, round, upturned Hollywood/plastic surgery noses in the media, that it is so refreshing to see the beautiful exotic long down curved noses that we have! And the sad thing, is that many people chop up their noses, to look Hollywood-a shame! So Baruch Gordon, I was wondering if maybe you could do a blog post on appreciating the exotic beautiful Jewish nose. You have a handsome one BTW!

    1. Upset? Where did I sound upset at? Oh yes, Im sorry, I forgot that along with not knowing how to speak, and lacking manners, you also have no reading comprehension. Anyways, nose fetish? Haha, are you jealous? Perhaps you are toting a short pig nose around and suffering nose envy :)

  12. totally pathetic childish nonsense-- the article, the girl, the talkbacks. first, is the picture of the ugly girl with the big mouth and the words Husband Now yisca? Or another desparate and crazy (yes, crazy) woman? second, all this one-track-mind obsession/compulsion re marriage which the girl showed will not bode well for the poor shmo who married her. in short, she's mentally ill-- in part thanks to the Demands of Orthodox Judaism-- and of course she simplemindedly thinks the cure is marriage (i.e., Husband Now!). I'm sure Baruch and some readers will lambast me as an unsympathetic epicoros, but maybe others will agree with me. I'll add that the only sane one in this alleged nes m'shamayim story is the girl's mother who while wishing the best for her tochter said, rationally, why not wait till after Shabbos?

    1. Not of all of us are loner recluses as yourself Pinchas! Some people prefer companionship, and sharing their life with someone, not hording away for one's selfish self. Who are you to come and knock people for wanting to get married! Are you a Yeshiva student from one of those more secretive homosexual encouraging cults? God made humans to get married, and make love, so if you think marriage and those wanting marriage are "insane", then God Almighty is "insane" as well. You are either an atheist closet homosexual, or just a very unhappy, cynical loner! I wish you the best!

    2. Mr. Best, you do have a serious issue with anger. It would be best [pun] if you would keep your beautiful huge nose out of any really important reply.

      Delete
    3. Mr. Best, I just thought that the reason you like to see a big nose is that you have nose envy. You could have your short pig nose fixed. Just trying to be helpful.

      Delete
    4. MR? Again, the reading comprehension on here is phenomenal! Since you easily have gender confusion, perhaps you should click on one's profile, to ensure that you are addressing them with the proper title, before you misspeak. I happen to be a Miss thankyou. And my profile picture is right there, I have a longer down turned nose, far from short or pigged LOL!!!! Lastly about your anger accusation, calling stupid people who are rude who like to offend others JERKS, makes me feel GOOD, certainly not angry; I quite ENJOY calling them and YOU a jerk, and am quite amused by it!

      Delete
    5. Ms. Best, My gender confusion was was quite rational because of your unacountable level of offensive reaction to people wanting to be helpful. You find that people like Pinchas must be a closet homosexual, atheist, etc. Mostly males who have way too much testosterone speak like that. I have to revise my feeling about your problem in finding a husband. You are far too smart to be married to any human, male or female.

      Delete
    6. Dearest the one too scared to have a name aka Anonymous: You must like me enough to keep picking on me! But in your strange attempts at my attention, you accuse me of things that you have no grounds to actually stand on, of course knowing I will respond to such accusations. For instance, my "level of offensive reaction"? I merely read the same comments as you, and found the need to DEFEND the girl in the story (since many of the comments were OFFENSIVE, not helpful regarding her), to defend women in general (again since many comments were OFFENSIVE towards women in general) and to defend Baruch Gordon (accusations of the story being fake). As for Pinchas, since he took it upon him self to accuse/assume that "everyone is insane in the story" and the "back and forth comments were immature", he thus gave me permission to assume about him. Further, I never said that "I HAVE a problem" finding a husband, I was speaking for women. Lastly, I do not marry females. Have I satisfied your curiosity now? :)

    7. Dear Chashmal, Your reply was a thoughtful well stated response. I happen to be a feminist. But what bothered me most was your violent attack on Pinchas. Pinchas take on this subject Feb.21 was very short on empathy for the girl wanting desperately to have a family life. There are many unmarried wonderful girls who would truly be a blessing to a worthy guy. But they need to find purpose in their life and doing self fulling, outgoing things so they may finally meet their Besheret. I wish you all the best.

      Delete
    8. Thank you ms. feminist, and I wish you the best too. However I am a bit confused, I enacted a violent attack? You mean I sent this Pinchas to the hospital? I actually was able to make my words jump out of the screen and beat this gentlemen up? I feel ashamed, I mean, I was just replying on this blog trying to defend others, including from this Pinchas man who wasn't kind AT ALL with his UGLY and INSANE remarks. I too could say that those were violent words, but luckily his words don't jump out of screens and beat up people. Does anyone have this Pinchas' address, perhaps I could levitate some flowers to him to cheer him up from my violent attack.

    9. I am a male who is proud to call myself a feminist. I truely beleive in all the ideology of this movement. So no more Ms. But women and men can do completely irrational behavior as per example of Baruch's blog on Yesco. Her actions borders on insanity. Her mother was right. Mentally disturbed people see only one goal and only one way to achieve that goal which usually winds them up in a mental hospital. whether she is nuts or not, some of the comments seem to me to be right on including Pinchas. Word violent was used as a very strong or powerful emotional response to something, not a physical act.
